In 2014, Elisa Wood, Kevin Normandeau and I co-founded Microgrid Knowledge, a news site about microgrids and distributed energy. In 2022, we sold the news site to Endeavor Business Media. I became a freelancer for the news site and other clients and launched CleanEnergyWriters.com, along with the podcast Clean Energy Today. Elisa started a community, Energy Changemakers.

In a recent Energy Changemakers podcast, I joined Elisa and Peter Asmus to discuss microgrids past and present. After Superstorm Sandy, microgrids were known for providing energy resilience. While that’s still key, they now play a number of other roles, including integrating renewable energy onto the grid, producing revenue, providing local energy control and boosting grid stability. In this podcast episode, we identify some of our favorite projects. For me, they include a microgrid on a farm that improves the taste of lettuce and a tribal microgrid that has been credited with saving lives.

Elisa recently launched Microgrids Now, which will continue her coverage of microgrids, with some occasional help from me.
